The fact is that human eyes can withstand very bright sunlight. But the problem is that they have to be trained. My eyes may hurt a little when the light is too bright, but a little squinting can fix that. However, people who wear sunglasses haven't trained their eyes and don't know how to react to bright light, and are therefore depended on sunglasses.

I would like to have the privelege to object to your assertion that the human eye does not need sunglasses. It is true that the eye is capable of constricting as an adaptation to limit the light that enters the eye, but it is nevertheless dangerous to allow too much ultraviolet radiation into the eye--something that sunglasses can help prevent. I agree that people should let their eyes take care of themselves in general, but when it is especially sunny, sunglasses are a good idea.
